No, you should not forget DR and DA, but you should stop buying links on them alone. In 2026, the brands that win are the ones AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews actually name in their answers. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found that brand mentions across the web correlate about three times more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do.

For more than a decade, link buyers followed one simple rule: the higher the DR or DA, the better the link. That rule made sense when Google showed ten blue links and the top result got most of the clicks. But search has changed. Buyers now ask AI tools for a shortlist, and AI visibility, meaning whether your brand appears in those AI answers, is becoming the new first page. This guide explains what changed, what the data shows, and how to choose guest posts that build both rankings and AI visibility.
Why DR and DA Stopped Telling the Full Story
Are DR and DA Google ranking factors?
No. Domain Rating (DR) is a score made by Ahrefs, and Domain Authority (DA) is a score made by Moz. Both estimate how strong a site's backlink profile is, on a scale of 0 to 100. Google has never used either one. Google's John Mueller has said this many times, including the line "We don't use domain authority at all in our algorithms" (Search Engine Journal).
That does not make DR and DA useless. They are a fast way to compare sites and filter out very weak ones. The problem starts when a score built by an SEO tool becomes the only reason to buy a link.
Why are clicks falling even when rankings stay the same?
AI Overviews now sit above the organic results for many searches. Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords and found that when an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate for the number one result drops by 58%, up from 34.5% in their earlier study (Ahrefs). Pages in position two lost about half their clicks, and even position ten lost close to 20%.
So a site can keep its rankings, keep its DR, and still lose traffic. If your brand is not inside the AI answer, many buyers never scroll down to see you.
A high DR tells you a site has links. It does not tell you whether AI trusts that site enough to quote it.
What AI Visibility Really Means
What is AI visibility in simple words?
AI visibility is how often, and how well, your brand shows up when people ask AI tools questions about your market. It has three separate parts:
- Mention: the AI answer names your brand, for example in a list of "best guest posting services".
- Citation: the answer links to your website as a source.
- Accuracy: the AI describes what you do, where you work and who you serve correctly.
A mention without a citation still builds trust. A citation without a mention can still send traffic. The strongest position is both, with an accurate description.
What are AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are two names for the same goal: making your brand easy for AI systems to find, understand, trust and cite. They are not a replacement for SEO. Google's own guidance says the usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special AI-only markup or files are needed (Google Search Central).
Key insight: AI tools do not pick the "best" business. They pick the business they can understand and verify most easily. That is something you can build.
What the 2026 Data Says About Links vs Mentions
Do backlinks or brand mentions matter more for AI?
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands to see which factors line up with appearing in Google AI Overviews. The results changed how many SEOs think about link building (Ahrefs):
- Branded web mentions: 0.664 correlation
- Branded anchors (your brand name as link text): 0.527
- Branded search volume: 0.392
- Backlinks: 0.218
Brands in the top 25% for web mentions earned up to 10 times more AI Overview mentions than the next group. And about 26% of the brands studied had zero AI Overview mentions at all.
What about ChatGPT and Google AI Mode?
Ahrefs ran a follow-up study across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. YouTube mentions showed the strongest link with AI visibility at about 0.737, and branded web mentions stayed high at 0.66 to 0.71. DR landed in the middle of the list, much weaker than branded signals (Ahrefs).
Does this mean backlinks are dead?
No, and this is where many articles get it wrong. These are correlations, not proof of cause. Big brands have more of everything: more links, more mentions, more searches. Also, a guest post is not "just a backlink". A good guest post puts your brand name on a trusted, relevant site, usually with a branded anchor. That is a brand mention and a branded anchor at the same time, which are two of the top three factors in the study.
The question is no longer "How high is the DR?" It is "Will this placement make AI talk about my brand?"

How Guest Posts Build AI Visibility
Why do AI tools care what other sites say about you?
Anyone can call themselves "the best" on their own website. AI systems look for confirmation from independent sources: news sites, niche blogs, reviews, directories and videos. When several trusted sites in your niche mention your brand in the same context, AI starts to connect your name with that topic.
What makes a guest post good for AI visibility?
- The brand is named clearly, with a sentence about what you do, not just a hidden link.
- The site is in your niche, so the mention builds the right topic connection.
- The site gets real organic traffic, which shows search engines trust it.
- The content answers a real question, so AI has a reason to quote it.
- The page is indexed and the site does not block AI crawlers.
A DR 40 site that is niche-relevant, indexed, visited and already cited by AI tools can do more for you than a DR 80 site full of random sponsored posts.
The 5-Point AI Test for Any Guest Post Site
Use this test before you pay for any guest post. It takes about 10 minutes per site.
- Traffic check: Look for steady organic traffic in Ahrefs or Semrush for at least 6 months, not a sudden spike.
- Niche check: At least 70% of the site's recent posts should be in your topic or a close one.
- Index check: Search
site:domain.comin Google. If few pages show up, the site may have indexing problems. - AI citation check: Ask 3 to 5 niche questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note whether this site appears as a source. One appearance is a strong green flag.
- Outbound link check: Open 5 recent posts. If most link to casinos, loans or unrelated niches, skip it.
For more red flags, read our guide on how to spot a fake guest posting site before you pay.
Quick win this week: Take the last 10 guest posts you bought. Run the AI citation check on each site. Keep buying from the ones AI already cites, and drop the ones that score high on DR but never appear in AI answers.
Checking Your Own AI Visibility for Free
How do I know if AI mentions my brand?
Paid tools exist, but you can get a clear baseline for free with this method:
- Write 10 buyer questions. Use the questions your customers ask before they buy, such as "best guest posting service for SaaS" or "where to buy safe backlinks". Do not include your brand name.
- Add 2 brand questions. For example, "What is [your brand]?" and "Is [your brand] reliable?"
- Ask each question in 4 tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (check the AI Overview).
- Record the results in a sheet: date, tool, question, whether you were named, whether your site was cited, which competitors were named, and which sources were cited.
- Repeat every 30 days with the same questions, so you can see the trend.
How should I read the results?
- Not mentioned at all: Look at which sites are cited instead. Those are your target publishers for guest posts and PR.
- Mentioned but not cited: Your brand is known, but your own pages are not seen as the best source. Improve your key pages with clear, factual answers.
- Described wrongly: State clearly on your homepage and About page who you are, what you offer and where. Add Organization schema with the same facts.
AI answers change between runs and between accounts. One test is a snapshot, not a final score. Trends over 3 months tell you much more.
The Hidden Blocker: Robots.txt and Cloudflare
Can my website be blocking AI without me knowing?
Yes, and it happens more often than you think. There are two common causes.
1. Robots.txt rules. OpenAI uses separate bots for different jobs. OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot is used for model training. You can allow one and block the other. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that changes can take about 24 hours to apply (OpenAI).
A simple setup that keeps you visible in ChatGPT search looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
2. Cloudflare bot settings. Since July 2025, new domains on Cloudflare have AI crawlers blocked by default (Search Engine Roundtable). Many site owners never check this setting. If you use Cloudflare, open Security, then Bots, and make sure the AI search crawlers you want are allowed.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. Google says no special AI files are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file will not hurt, but it is not a fix for poor visibility. Spend your time on clear pages, schema and mentions first.
What else should I check?
- Your important pages are indexed in Google. If not, see our guide on why websites get deindexed and how to fix it.
- Your site is added to Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT search relies heavily on Bing's index, so a site missing from Bing is harder for ChatGPT to find.
- Main content is in plain HTML, not hidden behind tabs or loaded only after a click.
- Organization, Article and FAQ schema are in place. Fix other problems from our list of hidden SEO errors.
Tracking AI Traffic in Google Analytics
How do I see visitors coming from ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Most AI visibility tools stop at mentions. But mentions only matter if they bring visitors and sales. In Google Analytics 4:
- Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
- Change the main dimension to Session source.
- Look for sources such as
chatgpt.com,perplexity.ai,gemini.google.comandcopilot.microsoft.com. - Create a custom channel group called "AI Search" that includes these sources, so you can track them together every month.
- Compare conversions from AI visitors with your organic visitors.
Also check Google Search Console. Google has started showing performance data for its generative AI features, which helps you see which pages appear in AI Overviews.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Technical fixes such as robots.txt can take effect within days. New guest posts and mentions usually need 4 to 12 weeks to be crawled, indexed and picked up in AI answers. Building a strong, steady presence in your niche usually takes 3 to 6 months of consistent work. Anyone promising AI mentions in a week is guessing.
Common Mistakes Link Buyers Make
- Buying on DR alone. A high score with no traffic or niche match is the most common waste of budget.
- Hiding the brand name. Using only keyword anchors and never naming the brand gives AI nothing to connect.
- Publishing only on your own site. AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
- Ignoring YouTube. Brand mentions in video titles and descriptions show the strongest link with AI visibility in the Ahrefs data.
- Never testing. If you do not ask AI tools about your market every month, you cannot know if your links are working.
- Vague homepages. Taglines like "We help you grow" tell AI nothing. Say exactly what you offer, for whom and where.

FAQs
Should I stop checking DR and DA completely?
No. Use DR and DA as a first filter to remove very weak sites. Then decide using traffic, niche relevance and AI citations.
Is a low-DR site ever worth buying?
Yes. A smaller site that is niche-relevant, indexed, visited and already cited by AI tools can deliver more value than a high-DR site with no focus.
Do brand mentions without a link help?
Yes. Ahrefs found that branded web mentions, linked or unlinked, had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility in its 75,000-brand study.
Which AI tools should I track?
Start with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. Add Copilot if your buyers use Microsoft products.
Can anyone guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT?
No. AI answers change between runs, models and locations. You can remove the reasons you are left out and build the signals AI trusts, but no one can promise a mention.
